TRC20 vs BEP20: Which USDT Network Is Cheaper for Your Customers?

October 10, 2026 · 5 min read

For most customers, sending USDT on BEP20 (BNB Smart Chain) is cheaper than on TRC20 (TRON). On BNB Smart Chain a transfer usually costs a few cents in gas, while a USDT transfer on TRON burns several TRX when the sender has no Energy. In practice, though, most customers pay from an exchange, and then the fee that matters is the exchange’s own withdrawal fee. The best checkout offers both networks, plus Binance Pay, which has no network fee at all.

TRC20 vs BEP20 at a glance

USDT TRC20 (TRON) USDT BEP20 (BNB Smart Chain)
Network fee paid in TRX (or staked Energy) BNB
Typical network cost About 6.5–13 TRX without Energy Usually a few cents or less
Address format Starts with T, 34 characters Starts with 0x, 42 characters
Popular with Exchanges, P2P traders, TRON wallets Binance users, BNB Chain wallets
Main mistake to avoid Sending on another network Confusing it with ERC20 (also starts with 0x)

Network figures are as of October 2026 and change with network parameters and coin prices. Always check the fee your wallet or exchange shows before sending.

Why does a TRC20 transfer cost TRX?

Sending USDT on TRON runs a smart contract, which uses two resources: Bandwidth and Energy. If the sending account has staked TRX, or rented or been delegated Energy, the transfer can cost almost nothing. If it has no Energy, the network burns TRX to cover it.

After TRON lowered the Energy price in 2025, a typical transfer to an address that already holds USDT burns roughly 6.5 TRX, and a transfer to a brand-new address burns roughly double. That is why TRC20 fees seem to “jump” between transactions: they depend on the sender’s resources and the receiving address.

Why is BEP20 usually cheaper?

BNB Smart Chain charges ordinary gas paid in BNB. Gas prices on the network are low, so a USDT token transfer typically costs a few cents or less. For a customer sending from their own wallet, BEP20 is usually the cheapest on-chain option.

The fee customers actually pay: exchange withdrawal fees

Most people do not pay from a self-custody wallet. They withdraw from an exchange, and the exchange charges a fixed withdrawal fee per network that it sets itself, often higher than the real network cost. On most exchanges the BEP20 withdrawal fee for USDT is lower than the TRC20 fee, but it varies, so the withdrawal screen is the source of truth.

There is a second, more important detail. On most exchanges the withdrawal fee is taken from the amount you send. If you withdraw 25.0037 USDT and the fee is 1 USDT, only 24.0037 arrives. For a payment that has to match an exact amount, the customer must make sure the amount received is correct. On Binance, set the “Receive amount” to the invoice amount and the app adds the fee on top.

The Clearqo payment page reminds customers of this for both networks, because it is the most common reason an on-chain payment arrives short. If it happens anyway, the money is not lost. Here is what happens when the wrong amount arrives.

What about Binance Pay?

If your customer has a Binance account, Binance Pay beats both networks: no network fee, no withdrawal fee, no network to choose, and the money arrives in seconds. Offer it first and keep TRC20 and BEP20 for customers paying from other wallets and exchanges.

Which network is faster?

Both networks confirm transactions quickly. What customers notice is how long the receiving exchange takes to credit the deposit, because exchanges wait for a set number of confirmations. In everyday use both networks usually arrive within a minute or two. Clearqo only counts a deposit once Binance reports it as successful, so an unconfirmed transaction never completes an order.

How to avoid sending on the wrong network

Which networks should a merchant offer?

Offer all three: Binance Pay for Binance users, BEP20 for the lowest on-chain fees, and TRC20 because many exchanges and P2P traders default to it. Every extra option removes a reason for a customer to abandon checkout. With Clearqo all three appear on one payment page, and each payment is verified automatically, whatever the network. Set it up on WooCommerce or use the API.

FAQ

Is TRC20 or BEP20 safer?

Both are widely used, established networks for USDT. The bigger real-world risk is human error: choosing the wrong network or sending the wrong amount. Double-check the network and the amount received.

Can I send USDT from TRC20 to a BEP20 address?

No. A transfer stays on the network it was sent on. The receiving address must be on the same network, so pick the network that matches the address.

Why did my TRC20 fee change from one transfer to the next?

It depends on your account’s Energy and on whether the receiving address has held USDT before. Sending to a new address costs roughly twice as much Energy.

Do merchants pay a fee to receive USDT?

No network fee is charged for receiving a deposit. Your payment service may charge its own fee. Clearqo, for example, uses a small fee per payment or a flat monthly plan.
